Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design to Debut New Pieces at ICFF NYC 2017

May 17, 2017

Atlanta, Georgia, May 16, 2017 — Skylar Morgan is standing at one end of Arciform, a 7-foot long, custom-built, walnut sideboard. It’s awaiting finishing touches — brass pulls handmade on site — inside the Westside Atlanta warehouse from which his line of modern furnishings are manufactured and shipped. Inspired by his grandparents’ 1960s record player cabinet, it’s among two of the new pieces added to the Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design signature collection and headed to ICFF NYC this week for their debut.

“The old record consoles always had this interesting latticework detail across the front because the speakers were built in, so I created a pattern with wood slats to reflect that idea,” Morgan explains of the woodwork that wraps around the curve of the sides and continues all the way across the back — so the piece can intentionally be viewed from the front and the back. “I wanted it to be able to sit in the center of the room if needed.” Sleek leather door panels and a black powder-coated steel base juxtapose the warm, rustic wood.

That mix of materials is an element found throughout the collection, including in the design of the Y Glass Coffee Table, the other piece just added to the line. A variation on the Y Coffee Table made with blackened steel, Morgan designed the new version with a smoked glass top to highlight the silhouette of the “Y” base. “The glass allows you to see through the table, and brings attention to the shape of the wood, and the 90-degree angles on the outside that meet with the interior curves, lending a more refined visual appearance,” Morgan says. Still, he didn’t want the glass to just sit on top. “I wanted to find a way for it to feel integrated into it.” So he created custom-made brass buttons to anchor the glass top to its base. “The idea is to deliver the highest amount of detail and surprise in the fewest amount of parts, so I try to let the materials speak for themselves,” he says.

The rest of the collection emphasizes the same minimal aesthetic, and a simplicity that highlights the craftsmanship along with the details that elevate the design. But while their “everyday modern” ideology means furnishings are refined enough to suit an elegant environment, they’re also made to be lived with, loved and worn in. “These pieces are meant to last a lifetime.”
