Kalmar Werkstätten Unveils Modular Hanging Lamp Spinne 35

May 23, 2017

Vienna/New York (May 23, 2017) – At the upcoming International Contemporary Furniture Fair New York, the Austrian lighting brand Kalmar Werkstätten will unveil its latest addition to the recently launched Spinne family: the Spinne 35 hanging lamp. Due to its multifunctional arrangement possibilities without any ceiling hardwiring, the Spinne lighting system adapts to every interior.

During Milan Design Week 2017, the Vienna-based lighting manufacturer Kalmar introduced Spinne, a unique lighting system with numerous arrangement options. For ICFF New York, designers Garth Roberts and Erik B. Kreider created another Spinne hanging lamp with a bigger shade that is suitable for large-scale lighting above dining tables. The new hanging lamp can be seen from 21 – 24 May, stand 1646, level 3, hall 3D.

Pendant lighting without ceiling hardwiring

The Spinne 35 hanging lamp is the second version of the modular Spinne lighting system. It operates without ceiling electrification, its system of metal elements and an elegant textile cable guiding power from the nearest wall outlet to a cone-shaped glass shade. The Spinne suggests a contemporary attitude in the manner the adjustable cable wraps jauntily around a wall-mounted plate, or in the LEDs glowing from within the glass.

Spinne was designed by Garth Roberts and Erik Berg Kreider. “Undertaking the design process with another creative mind is incredibly rewarding”, says Kalmar Werkstätten’s creative director Roberts. “The introduction of a new format of lighting, as well as new designers and new materials, inspired us to expand the brand to include Spinne”. Unlike other Kalmar Werkstätten designs, it is not based on drawings of the company’s archives, and yet speaks the same formal language as its peers. Indeed, few ceilings were electrified during the days of Austrian Werkbund. Moreover, archival photography of the Kalmar workshops show lamps strung across the ceiling not unlike the way the Spinne relates to its interiors.

About Kalmar Werkstätten

Through the middle of the 20th century, the Vienna based lighting company KALMAR realized lighting concepts for leaders of the Austrian Werkbund, including Josef Hoffmann, Josef Frank, and Oskar Wlach. For Kalmar Werkstätten, the most compelling designs from the Kalmar archive are selected and updated according to contemporary technical standards and lifestyles. The table and floor lamps, pendants and sconces can complement a space with intelligent reserve or stand out with individualistic flair. They are sourced for interiors of many styles, across a range of functions.
